If you’re choosing area rugs, it usually means you have hard flooring that you love. Rugs are a terrific way to accent hard flooring while enhancing your decor. They protect and soften our flooring and show it off all at the same time. But what size rug should I choose? Location and room size are significant factors. You also want to consider whether you have an open floor plan or a well-defined space. Remember, if you have a space that doesn’t work well with a standard-size rug, a custom area rug is an excellent option. We’re seeing this more and more in today’s luxury homes, where clients want area rugs perfectly suited for their unique spaces.
What Size Rug Should I Choose for My Living Room?
In most cases, the sofa is the centerpiece of your living room. You want to choose your rug accordingly. The living room is perfect for larger rugs: 8×10 or 9×12 or even more oversized for open spaces. However, you don’t want an area rug that looks like a carpet. Remember, the idea is to showcase your hard flooring while adding softness and color to the space. So be sure to leave at least 1 or 2 feet between the edge of the rug and the wall. Run your area rug lengthwise with your sofa, and make sure you have 6 to 8 inches of room on either side of your couch. Another option to add a splash of color and creativity while giving maximum exposure to your hard flooring is a smaller floating rug that goes between instead of under your seating. A colorful or patterned rug with a coffee table on it can be the perfect accent.
What Size Rug Should I Choose for My Bedroom?
Many clients opt for soft carpeting in the bedroom. However, hard flooring with a lovely area rug is also a popular option. Unlike the sofa, we often recommend running the rug horizontal to your bed. Again, make sure to leave plenty of room along the edges of the room and avoid running up against dressers or other furniture. We usually recommend an 8×10 or 9×12, but some spacious bedrooms and beds can support a luxurious 12×15. A 6×9 area rug is a terrific choice for a full or twin bed in a smaller room. It can be just enough to brighten and soften the space.
What Size Rug Should I Choose for My Dining Room?
We want an area rug to protect our hard flooring in the dining room while adding color and spark to our decor. We want easy cleaning and low maintenance in an area where we eat, drink and move chairs regularly. The size depends on the room and your dining set. As a rule of thumb, you want 2 feet of rug space beyond your chairs when they’re pushed in. You don’t want a rug that’s too small that will interfere with moving chairs in and out. However, you also want to avoid a large rug that will push up against china cabinets and other furniture. We often recommend 5×7 or 8×10 rectangles, depending on room size. Round rugs can also work beautifully in dining rooms if your table and space allow it.
